January 2014 Enrichment

In January, we met at Julie Marriott's house to do 2 service projects. One was making chicken enchiladas for Why Me and Sherry's House in Worcester. Why Me is a Worcester-based non-profit organization created to help central New England families cope with childhood cancer. Sherry's House is a place where kids and their families from all over New England can come and receive the support and encouragement they need to fight cancer together.

Why Me and Sherry's House work together to support families of children with cancer. Sherry's House provides no cost eight bedroom lodging for child cancer patients, their families and caregivers throughout the cancer treatment process. Families whose child is receiving treatment at any Massachusetts hospital come from all over the United States as well as Puerto Rico and Canada to stay at Sherry's House.

We were able to make 20 - 9x13" pans of chicken enchiladas!

The other project we did was making duffle bags for children who go into foster care. When these children are transferred between homes, they only have their clothing to take with them, and often it is stuffed into a garbage bag. These duffle bags are a way to help the foster children feel special.

Ginnie Woodworth was in charge of this project and did a lot of work preparing for us to sew the bags. We completed 16 duffle bags!

Both of these projects are something that you can do on your own if you'd like.

A big thank you to Julie Marriott for her hospitality and generosity in letting us use her house for this meeting.

We are grateful to Mary Alice Hatch and Ginnie Woodworth for leading our efforts.

Many thanks to everyone who participated in this service evening!
